Veeam - Covering your Assets

Tornados. Hackers. Ransomware attacks. And just plain mistakes. The files you use every day to run your business can disappear or become corrupted in an instant. You mean to back them up, but you never get around to it.
That data is as much an asset as the boxes in your warehouse, or the items on the shelves in your store, maybe even more so because it’s harder to replace. It isn’t what you sell though, is it?  Your focus, rightly so, is on what you sell.  The files just help you with that process.  So the value of that data and what it could cost your company if it was lost isn’t always top of mind.  It is very valuable though.

We do, too. The most advanced computer system supported by the best software does no one any good if the data it generates goes missing. We at ETG used to think that a single backup copy of a company’s data was enough, but with the advent of the cloud and the technology supporting it, and the new threats facing your data, it’s no longer just enough to have a single backup of your data.

This is where Veeam comes in. Veeam Software is a privately held US-based information technology company owned by Insight Partners that develops backup, disaster recovery and modern data protection software for virtual, physical and multi-cloud infrastructures. Elder Technology Group is a Veeam registered service provider.   We use their software to backup YOUR data, no matter where it is located.

Why Veeam?  According to Aaron Smith, ETG Systems Administrator, “Veeam is a leader in their market for backup and recovery of virtual and physical computer systems. Our largest client had been using them for years when I came on board at ETG. I thought it was important that we offer this for other clients, too.”
Veeam software allows Elder Technology Group to safeguard client information as securely as they do their own.

This is how Veeam works:

  • Veeam software makes a secure connection to your business’ network.
  • Veeam software then securely copies your data across that connection into Elder Technology Group’s network and then onto their hard drives and then into a secure cloud-based storage system as well.
  • Your data is copied to two separate locations, with the copy in the cloud being immutable, which means it can’t be deleted; accidentally or on purpose.

“You never think it's going to happen to you, and then it does,” Smith recalls. “We're all being attacked, but there are ways to hide the Veeam system so that they can’t tell.”

One of the most important features Veeam provides, that regular backups cannot, is immutability. “Immutability is a big thing, because even if they do see the network, and even if they somehow see the Veeam system and they encrypt it, we at least have a backup that they cannot encrypt because it's immutable. It can’t be touched.”.

ETG is a licensed service provider for Veeam and because they are, you have the advantage of getting the best security in the business serviced by ETG, a local firm you know and trust.

Besides being a systems administrator, Aaron Smith is also a 2022 Veeam certified architect and Veeam certified engineer.  He would be happy to answer any of your backup related concerns.
